Company: LinkedIn Corporation

Location: Palo Alto, California

Launch Date: 2003

In the company’s own words, what is it?

LinkedIn is the world’s largest and most effective business network. On LinkedIn, more than five million professionals find jobs, people and service providers through their existing network of business relationships. LinkedIn’s membership is diverse: 1.8 million members are in Europe and over half a million in Asia. Personal LinkedIn accounts are free, but LinkedIn earns revenue through a number of premium services. Hiring managers posting jobs on LinkedIn Jobs receive candidates recommended by fellow employees or other trusted contacts. More than 300,000 service providers listed in the LinkedIn Services business-to-business directory have an opportunity to be at the top of the search results when contacts of their former clients search for recommended service providers. More than 1,200 membership organizations use LinkedIn for Groups to strengthen connections between members and develop greater loyalty to the organization. LinkedIn Business and Pro Accounts enable recruiters and researchers to find people beyond their networks and get in touch with job candidates and experts more quickly and efficiently.

Outside quote about company:

Quoted by Mark Kvamme, partner at Sequoia Capital: “The business potential for social software is quite limited. In contrast, LinkedIn is squarely focused on trusted business referrals, which is how business gets done and for which real money gets spent every day and all over the world.”  “LinkedIn provides both patented and effective technology that has the power to transform hiring—very much in the way PayPal re-engineered the transfer of money and Google dramatically increased the utility of the Internet for individual consumers and professionals.”

Features:

*  Find potential clients, service providers, subject experts, and partners who come recommended
* Be found for business opportunities
* Search for great jobs
* Discover inside connections that can help you land jobs and close deals
* Post and distribute job listings
* Find high-quality passive candidates
* Get introduced to other professionals through the people you know

    The company started 10 months back from folks who worked at Microsoft.

    COmpany’s like LinkedIn/Syntraxis just are very unique and quite seprate from just common photo/video/music sharing concepts. It’s the unique value preposition and offer advantages to the user base.
