TechAddress: Tell me a bit about your company, what it does and what’s your value proposition?
Eyespot: There are two parts of our business. One is eyespot.com, a direct-to-consumer video editing and sharing site. Users can upload video, photos, and music and use Eyespot to create short mashups. After the creating their stories, users can distribute video from Eyespot to mobile phones, portable device, blogs, and other video sharing sites.
The second part of our business is a white label technology platform.
All the features available on eyespot.com are available to media companies, social networks, video portals, and other businesses that want to add social media aspects to their online properties. We provide our technology as a fully managed turn-key solution, i.e. we’re an ASP.
TechAddress: What makes your company stand apart from your competitors?
Eyespot: There are many companies who provide turn-key video hosting solutions. We differ in that we offer video editing and mashup applications in addition to the commodity hosting platform. We also differ in that our solution offers an end-to-end mobile solution that allows users to share and watch their favorite videos on their mobile phones.
TechAddress: What are some of the main features?
Eyespot: Easy-to-use video editing within a web browser. A deep library of stock footage and video available to all. Sending video to mobile phones. Downloading video in numerous formats such as iPod, PSP, Quicktime, and Windows Media. One-click-publishing of video to other video hosting sites.
TechAddress: Who’s your target customer or audience?
Eyespot: Our website, eyespot.com, is for anyone who wants to have fun with the video they have shot without going through the hassle of learning how to use complicated video editing software.
Our white label platform targets record labels, film studios, broadcast media companies, social networks, video portals, wireless carriers, and ad agencies.
TechAddress: Any new things in particular that you’re working on right now?
Eyespot: Our mobile sharing feature works with any video-enabled phone on any major U.S. carrier. There is no need to download or install an application on the phone. However we will soon release Eyespot Mobile Share, a Java and BREW mobile application that will provide a number of great ways to share video on the mobile phone.
TechAddress: Where do you see your company heading in the future?
Eyespot: We plan to be a leading provider of social media technology and mobile video sharing technology.
TechAddress: Any negative feedback or criticism regarding technology and services?
Eyespot: This is a great time for technology enthusiasts. We are experiencing massive innovation and disruption, which is always great for consumers. At the same time, technology is generally still over-complicated. Product managers need to strive for simplicity and usability. Usefulness is greatly diminished by complexity.
TechAddress: So what would you say is the guiding principle behind your company?
Eyespot: Usability. Elimination of barriers to adoption. Consumers WANT to shoot video of their experiences and assemble it into short stories to share with their friends and family. But video editing has always been something that only Hollywood professionals can figure out. With Eyespot we want to make it easy for any one to quickly assemble video into a short story and then share it with the world.
TechAddress: What is the mission of your company and what are you bringing to the market that is innovative?
Eyespot: Let’s answer this by way of example. Pick any event you have ever video recorded, or that you have seen someone recording: a wedding, a picnic, your kid’s baseball game, a holiday celebration. No one ever sits down and watches these videos. Never. The reason is because it’s boring and it’s a poor use of time. But if you can easily take the best parts of the event and quickly assemble them into a 2 or 3 minute highlight film, all of your friends and family would be overjoyed to watch it.
This is an example of storytelling. Our mission is to enable storytelling.
TechAddress: Where are you in terms of funding and your lifecycle?
Eyespot: Closed a $3.7M Series A led by Gabriel Venture Partners in October.
TechAddress: If your technology or service is not formally launched yet, when’s the launch date?
Eyespot: We launched in April 2006.
